Recently, we were honored to support The SAFE Coalition’s Teen Life Skills Classroom , an ongoing program that equips young people with the tools they need to succeed beyond the family home.

SAFE Coalition is a nonprofit organization providing compassionate, judgment free support to individuals and families impacted by substance use, mental health challenges, and related concerns. As part of their mission, SAFE runs a year long Teen Life Skills Classroom that meets weekly to teach essential skills that many young people leave home without knowing. These sessions are taught in collaboration with local business owners and community partners, making them truly unique and impactful.

We raised $6,732 last year. Overall in 2024, the Brakes for Breasts program raised $272,920.72, with 132 independent repair shops across 31 states.

Why is this mission important?

The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2024 there will be over 310,720 people diagnosed with Breast Cancer and over 42,250 will die. With those numbers it’s hard to find anybody who hasn’t been touched by Breast Cancer. Although treatment is better than it’s ever been, why do we wait until it happens to treat it – Let’s stop it before it happens. Many of you have lost a loved one to this horrible disease – or maybe you are the one fighting or the one helping a loved one fight. Brakes for Breasts supports Dr Vincent Tuohy’s research efforts to develop a Breast Cancer Vaccine and his philosophy of prevention.

The Brakes for Breasts campaign raised $200,000 just in 2022 for the Cleveland Clinic breast cancer vaccine research project. Its motto: Prevention is the cure. Since 2011, the collective efforts of independent auto repair shops across the United States have readied $1,631,066 for this groundbreaking research.

Checking your vehicle’s cabin air filter may help you avoid costly repairs!

Why should you check your vehicle’s cabin air filter? Mice and other rodents have been making more frequent visits into our customers’ vehicles and leaving a trail of damage as they search for a warm place to nest. We saw it often, though, even throughout the warmer months this past summer, so we suggest being vigilant and checking your car’s cabin air filter all year.

What do we see exactly when inspecting your vehicle's air filters? It can range from a huge nest of leaves and other debris sitting right on top of the engine to droppings and bird seeds inside the folds of the cabin air filter itself, which spill over into the air box or glove compartment. We have also seen mice chew up the liners of the hood, as well as shred the insulation in the trunk to make nests. Some customers will report a strange smell or a lack of airflow through the vents. In the worst case scenarios, the mice chew up the wires and can actually cause so much damage to your car that the vehicle is totalled. It is believed the mice are attracted to the soy compound in the wire coverings.

Sometimes acorns will get lodged in the blower motor housing and cause a rattling or whirring sound. If not addressed, this can cause premature failure of the blower motor due to it working harder than it is designed to do. When we take out the cabin air filter, we also vacuum out the surrounding area and leave everything clean. If the smell persists, we also have a ventilation cleaner which can help freshen the system. The function of the cabin air filter is to filter out pollen, dust, bacteria, and exhaust from other cars on the road from the air entering the HVAC system. This is the air that enters the passenger compartment of your vehicle so it is the air you are breathing. Changing your car cabin air filter every 10-12,000 miles will help keep the quality of that air cleaner.

The trained automotive technicians at Grove Street Auto Repair will offer to remove and inspect your vehicle’s cabin air filter at every oil change service. If this is something you do yourself at home, just let us know. Otherwise, we can remove it, check the condition of the filter, and replace it if needed. As always, we take pictures of contaminated filters and include that in the Digital Vehicle Inspection report that is texted to you.

Wondering what you can do to prevent the damage? Some people have used moth balls or dryer sheets, which usually do not smell great. A product called Grandpa Gus is something we have seen some success with. It is a set of small pouches scented with peppermint and cinnamon essential oils. You place these in various spots around your engine compartment and in the glovebox. The smell targets the mouse’s olfactory system, and the mouse becomes scared and irritated. It then cannot smell food or predators, which in turn makes it not feel safe. The theory appears to be that then they find somewhere else to hang out instead of your car!

Catalytic Converter Theft Deterrent bill passed

What happens if my catalytic converter is stolen?

You jump into your car in the morning, start it up and suddenly it sounds like you are driving a tractor trailer truck. That could be a sign that your car’s catalytic converter has been cut out of your exhaust system and stolen in the dead of night. That same catalytic converter is now being sold by the thieves to a scrap yard for cash.

Let’s talk about the function of the catalytic converter, why it is so valuable, who is most at risk for theft and the new Catalytic Converter Theft Deterrent law just passed in Massachusetts.

Catalytic converters help reduce the contaminants emitted by an automobile’s exhaust. They are typically composed of rare metals such as platinum, palladium or rhodium, which makes them worth between several hundred to several thousand dollars. How much is a new catalytic converter? Catalytic converters can cost as much as $3,500 or more to replace. Will my insurance cover the cost of a stolen catalytic converter? Insurance companies only pay for the replacement of a catalytic converter if the car owner has comprehensive auto insurance coverage.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, there has been a dramatic 1,215% increase of catalytic converter theft nationwide since the pandemic began. Higher clearance vehicles, like SUVs and trucks, are more likely to fall prey to this theft because it is easy to slide under those vehicles and quickly cut off the catalytic converter. They're worth even more when lifted from hybrid gas-electric vehicles, like a Toyota Prius, because their converters contain more of the metals. Locally, we know this theft has happened multiple times, with some of the targets being large fleet trucks in lots that are not well lit or are near a wooded area, creating an easy opportunity for the thieves.

There is some good news finally. After years of no easy way for law enforcement to track the stolen catalytic converters and no laws to hold the scrap yards that purchase stolen catalytic converters accountable, a new bill passed in Massachusetts will address these issues at least on some level. On December 7th, 2022, Governor Baker signed into law Bill H.5356 relative to the sale of old metals and vehicle catalytic converters.

This bill will make it much harder for thieves who are stealing catalytic converters to convert them into a quick sale at the scrap yards. With this new law, scrap metal buyers must now require proof of identification and a bill of sale or other document indicating ownership of the catalytic converter from sellers. Buyers will also need to keep records of all catalytic converter sales including the sellers’ name, address and license plate number and they could face fines up to $700 for violating the requirements. We look forward to the impact this bill could have on the underground catalytic converter theft market.
